Sometimes, and more often than not, Valentines has a knack for arriving around the same time you’re broke. It’s like it can sense that you just paid your DMV registration for both your vehicles and that you haven’t gotten any overtime at work in weeks. I don’t know how it dose it, but unfortunately it does.
In the beginning of our marriage times were tight, just like many other newlyweds. I remember our first valentines making my husband a steak dinner at home and having to get REALLY creative since we didn’t actually have a dining room table. I took 2 plastic totes and put them side by side and used a red blanket as a table cloth. Instead of chairs we sat on the floor on pillows. As a gift I took a stick and used a wood burner to write Let’s Stick Together on it. My sweet husband still has that stick 7 years later!
Getting Over the years I have come up with new and fun things to do year after year, so getting creative on Valentine’s Day is now like a specialty of mine. Depending on the year sometimes we can go all out or we just choose to do something fun but cheap because we would rather save the money.
Here are some of our favorite Valentines dates.
Basic Scavenger Hunt
The first year we lived in California we were broke, like super, crazy, ridiculous broke. I don’t think we had two pennies to rub together. We were living with our in-laws since we moved to California a couple months prior and our savings had dwindled quick. Valentines happened to be on the weekend that year, so we got to spend the whole day together. Luckily, my mother-in-law gave us each a $5 gift card to Starbucks that morning so we used it to go get a coffee. After our coffee date we took our basic scavenger hunt list and drove around town playing the game. In all honesty we had a tremendous amount of fun. Anytime you make something a competition between us two you know we are going to have fun.

Breakfast in Bed
This can be done many different ways. You can either make breakfast together then go eat it in bed, one spouse can make breakfast for the other, or you can have the kids help you make breakfast with one or both parents. Just make sure you eat it in bed so that it still feels special and fun.
Go for a Hike
There’s something so peaceful about being out in nature. It can be a great way to decompress from work or the chaos of keeping up with your motherly and wifely duties. Go as a family or a couple to your favorite forest, park, or hiking trail. Don’t forget the water and snacks, especially if your bringing the kiddos. You don’t want to be in the middle of nowhere without snacks for your littles. That, my friend, is a recipe for disaster.
Most cities and towns have a nice park either by the local river or surrounded by trees, just find one with nice scenery and pack a fun lunch. Don’t forget to bring a blanket so you aren’t getting poked by grass the whole time you eat. As a bonus you can bring some cards and play a card game while relaxing outdoors.
Make Homemade Chocolate Fondue
This is such fun and easy dessert to do either as a couple or as a family. All you need to get is some toothpicks, melting chocolate from the baking section at the grocery store, and all your desired dipping items. We love to do strawberries, sliced bananas, marshmallows, graham crackers, pretzels, and almonds.
A Day at the Beach
Now this only works if you live close or within driving distance to a beach. If you don’t have a beach near you, then you can go to a lake or a resivore. Our resivore is super nice and peaceful, but I live in Oregon, so the scenery is just breath taking. Whatever you have close to you is ok, just make sure it’s a place that makes you feel at peace and you actually enjoy being. If not, then it defeats the whole purpose.
Play A Game
I don’t know about you, but I love games. All of them. You name it and I’m down to play. Board game, card game, charades, murder in the dark, just tell me a time and place and I’M THERE. I think the thing I love about them most is it’s a way to have fun and connect with others weather its friends, your spouse, or your family. My dream is to have some friends like in the movie Game Night that come over every couple weeks just for game night. I feel like that would make some awesome memories. Don’t you?
Make a Fun Combination
Pick your favorite activities from the list above and make a fun combination. Here are some ideas.
- Start with breakfast in bed, then go a hike, and end the night with a game.
- Start with breakfast in bed, then get a coffee spend the day doing your scavenger hunt.
- Start with breakfast in bed and then spend the day at the beach.
- Start with breakfast in bed, then go for a picnic lunch, and end the day with making chocolate fondue.
Be creative and mix it up. Pick a few of my ideas or add in some ideas of your own. Valentines can be enjoyed even when your broke. Don’t let your back account, or lack thereof, steal your Valentine’s day from you!
