If you don’t know who Mel Robbins is then do yourself a favor and go look her up or even better yet, go read a couple of her books. Here’s a little snippet about her from her website just to tease you a little.
“She (Mel Robbins) has spent the past decade coaching, teaching, and motivating millions of people around the world. Her practical, no-nonsense advice and life strategies provide tangible results and skills that help people push through the everyday challenges we all face in life, work, and love.”
So, I came across Mel through her widely viewed 20-minute Ted talk on YouTube called, “How to Stop Screwing Yourself Over.” It was this short but powerful video that changed the way I view life, goals, and taking action. It was also my introduction to the world of Motivational Mel.
I think the thing I like about Mel most is the fact that when she motivates or gives advice, she doesn’t sugar coat it 1 bit. She tells you exactly how it is, no BS, no excuses, no sugar coating, just raw, honest to God truth no matter how hard it is to hear.
The world is full of enough excuses as it is. We don’t need motivational speakers who justify or give us a free pass on them. We need someone to show us the truth and ask us, “What if you stopped with the excuses and actually went after your goals and dreams in life? This is the kind of motivational speaker we all need.
In Mel’s Ted talk she starts by talking about how 1/3 of the population feel dissatisfied with their life. Can you visualize that? That’s about 100 Million people. Wow! Just wow!
This means that 100 Million people are dissatisfied with where their life is at. Whether that’s with their weight, their income, where they live, their rocky marriage or a multitude of other things. Why is this a reality for so many people? Well, because they aren’t working at changing it.
Mel says in her video, getting what you want is simple, just not easy. Let’s elaborate on this one. Say you want to lose weight. Well, your end goal is simple. In order to lose weight, you need to exercise and eat right. That is simple, but it’s not easy.
Say you want to get up before your kids and have some alone time. The goal is simple. You need to set your alarm an hour earlier and get out of bed the moment it goes off. See it’s simple, it’s just not easy.
You see where she’s going with this? In a nut shell she is saying that whatever you want in life is actually simple to get, it’s just not easy. The road to your dream or goal is simple, but the action steps you have to take to actually get there aren’t easy.
These action steps require you to get out of the confinements of your head, get past your feelings of fear and laziness, and getting out of your ridiculously small comfort zone. The hard part is that these are all things that make us pull the brakes faster than Speedy Gonzales.
Why is that? Simply put, we don’t feel like it. Our alarm goes off and we snooze it because we don’t feel like getting up. It’s time to go to the gym and we skip because we don’t “feel like” going. We are offered a piece of cake and decide to eat it because we don’t “feel like” eating healthy.
These next words Mel said changed my mindset forever. “You will NEVER feel like it.”
How true is that? If you’re trying to lose weight, then you’re never going to feel like eating right or working out. If you want to wake up earlier every morning, then I can promise you that you’re never going to feel like getting out of bed in the morning. If you want to start your dream business, then you’re never going to “feel like” sacrificing your nights and weekends to get it off the ground.
You will NEVER feel like it, but DO IT ANYWAY!
That’s the difference between setting your goals and you actually achieving them. This is what Mel called the “Activation Energy.” It’s the energy that pushes you to change your behavior. This change is forced by you and will be required when you change anything in your normal routine.
Mel says that the important part to remember is the 5 second rule. (She even wrote a book about this exact rule and goes into much more detail on it. Check it out, “The 5 Second Rule by Mel Robbins.”)
This rule means you have 5 seconds to put activation energy in motion or you will “pull the e-brake and kill whatever idea you had.” This applies to everything in life, not just your goals.

Say you see someone at church that you really want to introduce yourself to. Well, you have 5 seconds to start walking over there or you have pulled the break and let your fear or nervousness win.
Say your alarm goes off to wake up earlier or go work out. Well, you have 5 seconds to throw the covers off, roll out of bed, and start your day or you pull the break and let laziness win. You will never feel like it, but you have to not let that fact be what keeps you from getting what you want in life.
Go watch Mel’s Ted talk on YouTube. “How to Stop Screwing Yourself Over” This talk will motivate you even more than just reading the highlights. I also recommend reading her book “The 5 Second Rule” or better yet really any of her books.
Then I want you to start putting this whole concept into action. Now that you know that you’re never going to feel like it so there’s no need to wait around for it, I want you to start stepping out into the world beyond your little box. If that means going after your goal of dropping 50 pounds, building your dream business, or even introducing yourself to that person at church, just do it. Put activation energy in motion within 5 seconds of the idea and start getting out of your head, past your feelings, and outside of your comfort zone. You can do this. It’s simple, just not easy.
